Mar 11-12: Upcoming Events

FROM THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY
CIVIL RIGHTS HERITAGE CENTER:

FAITH, BLACK CHURCHES, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 2021, 6PM – 8PM
Register to join a panel of local faith leaders as they confront their role in movements for social justice.

In February 2021, local PBS affiliate, WNIT, aired the two-part documentary series, “The Black Church,” from noted historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The documentary “traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America, all the way down to its bedrock role as the site of African American survival and grace, organizing and resilience, thriving and testifying, autonomy and freedom, solidarity and speaking truth to power.”

The IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center seeks to add to this by convening local leaders including the Black churches in a discussion entitled, “Faith, Black Churches, and Social Justice.” The panel features representatives from various local faith communities, and focuses on the historic, current and possible future roles of these groups working for equity and justice.

Civil Rights Heritage Center Director Dr. Darryl Heller will lead the panel in a lively and informative discussion. Guests are encouraged to view live on Zoom or Facebook Live.

Registration for this free event is required. Visit https://go.iu.edu/3FyN.

The Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC) will hold its Congressional 2nd District hearing, virtually, from 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, March 30.  Please attend, and tell commissioners what you want (example: no districts that look like salamanders!) from your new congressional and state legislature districts. The ICRC has been assembled by All IN 4 Democracy, a coalition of organizations working for redistricting reform, including the LWV of Indiana. The nine-member commission is a “let’s-show-them-how-it-can-be-done” effort that will draw up fair districts, and then present their map to the Indiana legislature this summer once 2020 Census data is certified.  Your District 2 commissioner is Ranjan Rohatgi, an assistant professor of mathematics at St. Mary’s College, South Bend, who has developed a course titled “The Mathematics of Voting.” CLICK HERE to register for the March 30 hearing.
